What this consultation covers

This consultation seeks views on proposals to improve connections between Keynsham, Bath and Bristol, making sustainable travel a more practical choice. The proposals are designed to create or maintain safe and reliable routes for all users, balancing new bus stops with the needs of general traffic. Following previous feedback, bus lanes on the Keynsham Bypass are no longer part of the scheme.

The new proposals aim to open up access to the X39 Bath to Bristol bus service to residents of Keynsham, and provide a new, safe, continuous active travel route between Bath and the centre of Bristol, creating journey opportunities that don’t currently exist.

The proposals that form part of this consultation are:

• Two new bus stops on Keynsham Bypass, one in each direction, and a staggered signalised crossing between them for easy and safe access from Keynsham
• Two new access points to the bypass, in Memorial Park and on Gaston Avenue
• A new 2.1 mile (3.45 kilometre) active travel path along the full length of the southern side of the bypass, safely segregated from the A4
• A reduction in the speed limit on the bypass from 70 mph to 40 mph. This reduction is needed to support the road layout changes for the new bus stops and path, and would be controlled by cameras that monitor average speed
• A reduction in the speed limit on Hicks Gate roundabout, from 40 mph to 30 mph
  Widening the path along Station Road to be shared use, and improving crossings at Pool Barton and Priory Road 
• Improving Keynsham High Street roundabout to increase safety for all users, through slightly narrowing the traffic lanes and junctions. This would include creating new zebra crossings on all ‘arms’ of the roundabout
• Changes to thirteen existing bus stops in and around Keynsham. Twelve bus stops would be upgraded, and one bus stop (Keynsham Church Stop B) would be removed or relocated to provide space for the roundabout improvements

The proposals are being developed in close collaboration with Bath & North East Somerset Council and Bristol City Council, and have shared objectives with the Keynsham Town Centre Regeneration Action Plan.
