Bath - changes on the Wellsway

Bath - changes on the Wellsway

We’re proposing several changes along the Wellsway between Midford Road and Devonshire Buildings.

Proposals

  • Creating a new segregated two-way cycle lane between Midford Lane and Hatfield Road that runs along the right-hand side of the Wellsway when you are heading towards the city centre. To accommodate this, we would move the central reservation to help separate cyclists from traffic, and we would plant new trees.
  • Widening the pavements at Hatfield Road and creating a new-style pedestrian crossing
  • Making the section of Greenway Lane between Entry Hill and the Wellsway for cycles and access only. Vehicles could no longer be able to turn left onto the Wellsway
  • Extending a short section of the existing bus lane further south
  • Improving the bus stops by Devonshire Villas:
    • Moving the stops on either side of the road slightly further south, so that buses travelling from the city centre stop just beyond St Luke’s Road
    • The stops would have new shelters, with digital travel information screens and bus stop signs that are easier to see
    • Widening the nearby pavements with step-free kerbs, so it’s safer to use buses
    • New double yellow lines, so it’s easier for buses to pull away
  • We’re also looking at a number of possibilities along the Wellsway for new pedestrian crossings

What could these changes mean?

Pedestrians would gain from wider pavements and safer crossings, cyclists would benefit from a new safer cycling route that is separated from traffic, and people who travel by bus would have faster journeys during busy times.

However, the proposed changes would mean reducing car parking along the Wellsway between Midford Road and Devonshire Buildings by an estimated 37 spaces, with some parking spaces moving from one side of the road to the other.

We recognise these proposals won’t be perfect for everyone. We would like to talk and listen to your concerns. The detailed proposals for car parking are shown on the drawings below.

Please share your views with us through the survey below or by attending our drop in event at St Luke’s Church on Wednesday 19 July between 3pm-8pm. You can also join our webinar on 6 July.

How will the plans look?
